Chapter 1: Developing Cultures of Collaborative Inquiry

I decided to open up the blog by sharing some of my favorite quotes from the text, Got Data, Now What?, and then adding a few comments about each.  As you reply to my post, share some of your favorite quotes and the thoughts that came to mind with each one personally.  Enjoy!

  1. "Outdated expectations and structures cannot meet the learning needs of today's students....A cohesive approach to school improvement requires new ways of thinking about and structuring teachers' work."
-This is exactly where we are today. Today's public schools, such as Haley, are dealing with educating students that come to us with needs that we have not had to meet in the past, and are unsure of how to meet them today. Unless we work together, I think we will continue missing educating ALL students.

  2. "Some teachers still perceive working with colleagues outside the classroom as shifting away from their real with students. However, in this changing climate, collaborative interaction is, in fact, as much a part of teachers' work as is their time in the classroom with students."
-I know we still work with many in educating that feel better about teaching isolation, rather than sharing their strengths and weaknesses with others. No one can become better alone...

    1. Our special education preschool went a year with no PL. All the teachers felt like we were missing something. The previous year we had had many PL during the workday so everyone could attend and it was very beneficial. I think we can learn from each other as long as there is an open mind. Sometimes the collaboration is a reflection on us. If we aren't getting anything out of it? How does it need to change? What do you do that I don't do that works for these students?

  3. re we unsure how to deal with academic concerns or are we talking about outside of the classroom needs such as hunger, neglect, apathy, etc. Many times I feel overwhelmed as a teacher just trying to meet basic needs of students. When those needs are met I feel I can focus on my student's academic needs. But many of my students, and it seems like there are more every year, are needing basic needs that need to be met in order to become engaged learners in the classroom. I feel that I am taking time away from teaching to meet the basic needs of students.

    1. Jenny I agree that it is unfortunate that we have to focus on students' basic needs in the public school setting, however, I think we have to figure out how to meet the needs of students both academically and their life needs in order for all to be successful.

    2. I have found that in my own classroom, the basic needs for my students are even more present day to day. Some of my students are starving and some need hugs just to become talkative. I am hoping that maybe with the free breakfast for everyone will help some of my students.
